ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES

Councillor Matthew Bennett (Labour)

Gipsy Hill Ward and Cabinet Member for Housing

email: mpbennett@lambeth.gov.uk
twitter: twitter.com/cllrmattbennett
tel: 07805 941 837
address: Lambeth Town Hall, Brixton Hill, London, SW2 1RW

Cllr Bennett is the Member for Housing and so is responsible for overseeing the regeneration programme. He has said to many residents that ultimately it will be the cost that is the deciding factor in the final decision.  He has said verbally that the costings would be shared with residents, but has never committed in writing to the financial viability assessment which will be used to justify the Council’s preferred option ever being made public. Cllr Bennett has been heavily criticised for his handling of the Cressingham Gardens regeneration where residents were consulted on a range of options, including refurb, only to be told two years later that in fact the only choice would be partial or full demolition.

Cllr Bennett is active on twitter and his interactions with @savecentralhill have been very enlightening…(screen shots available here).

Councillor Jennifer Braithwaite (Labour)

Gipsy Hill Ward Councillor and Cabinet Member for Environment & Sustainability

email: jbrathwaite@lambeth.gov.uk
twitter: @JenniferBrathwa
tel: 0780 594 3813
address: Lambeth Town Hall, Brixton Hill, London, SW2 1RW

Cllr Braithwaite first took to Cabinet the proposal for Central Hill to be put into the regeneration programme. She has spoken about “systemic” problems on the estate – these have not been backed up with evidence from any structural experts or architects. Cllr Braithwaite’s brief as the Member for the Environment and Sustainability means she must take an interest in the environmental and community impact of demolishing the estate. A high density re-build will have a significant impact on local infrastructure and access to schools and services.

Councillor Niranjan Francis (Labour)

Gipsy Hill Ward Councillor

email: nrfrancis@lambeth.gov.uk
tel: 07946 218 601
address: Lambeth Town Hall, Brixton Hill, London, SW2 1RW

All has been quiet from Cllr Francis on the regeneration proposals. As a local resident and one of our elected representatives it would be good to hear his views…

Helen Hayes MP (Labour)

Member of Parliament for Dulwich and West Norwood

email: helen.hayes.mp@parliament.uk
twitter: @helenhayes_
tel: 020 7219 6971
address: House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA

Helen Hayes was elected in 2015. She is very much aware of the regeneration programme and has a professional background in planning and urban regeneration.
More on her links to the controversial regeneration happening in Brixton can be found here: http://www.brixtonbuzz.com/2015/04/dulwich-and-west-norwood-labour-party-candidate-clarifies-position-regarding-her-company-and-brixton-arches-evictions/

Helen met with a group of residents before the election and listened to concerns about Lambeth’s approach to ‘consultation’ and lack of transparency. She met with Cllr Bennett and proposed a working group of council officers and residents chaired by an independent person. This was referred to in Cllr Bennett’s letter to residents in April – but we have yet to hear any more about it…
